How to Change Your AC Filter (Step-by-Step)

The simplest maintenance task that saves you the most money.

Changing your air filter is like changing the oil in your car. It's cheap, easy, and if you don't do it, your engine (compressor) will blow up.

Step 1: Find Your Filter Size

Before you go to the store, you need to know what size you need. The size is printed on the side of your old filter (e.g., 20x20x1 or 16x25x1).

If you don't have an old filter, measure the opening of the return grill.

Step 2: Locate the Return Grill

In most Antelope Valley tract homes, the filter is located in a large metal grill in the ceiling or hallway wall. You will see two small tabs or latches on the side. Flip them open, and the grill will swing down.

In older homes or mobile homes, the filter might be located inside the closet where the furnace is.

Step 3: Check the Arrow Direction (CRITICAL)

This is where most people mess up. Every filter has an arrow printed on the side that says "Airflow Direction".

➡️ THE ARROW MUST POINT TOWARDS THE UNIT ➡️

If the filter is in the ceiling, the arrow should point UP (towards the attic).

If the filter is on the side of the furnace, the arrow should point INTO the furnace.

If you put it in backwards, the filter will restrict airflow and might even collapse into the fan.

Step 4: Close and Latch

Slide the new filter in, swing the grill close, and secure the latches. You're done! Mark your calendar for 30 days from now.
